School Success 101

The Student Handbook for Your Future

Understanding how school actually works is your secret weapon. Credits, GPA, endorsements—these aren't just random numbers. They're the rules of the game that determine your future options. Master them, and you'll have more choices when it matters most.

The Academic Currency: Credits

Think of credits like points in a video game—you need to collect enough to "win" (graduate). But unlike a game, you can't just replay levels. Every semester counts.

What is a Credit?

A credit represents "seat time"—the hours you spend learning a subject.

1.0 credit = 120-150 hours of instruction (full year)
0.5 credit = One semester of a year-long course

The Semester Split: Why Every Semester Matters

Spring
0.5 credits
January - May
Important: If you fail ONE semester, you only get 0.5 credits instead of 1.0. You'll need to make it up in summer school or repeat the course!

The Attendance Rule (Most States)

Here's a rule that surprises many students: You can have a perfect A grade but still lose credit if you miss too many days.

The Common Rule

Most states require 90% attendance to receive credit. In a typical semester (90 class days), that means you can miss no more than 9 days. Some states are stricter (95%) or more lenient (85%).

Excused vs Unexcused

Excused absences (doctor's notes, family emergencies) often don't count against you, but you'll need documentation. Check your school's specific policy.

Pro Tip: Keep all doctor's notes and documentation. If you're getting close to the limit, talk to your counselor BEFORE it becomes a problem.
