Frequently Asked Questions
Should I take the SAT or ACT?
Both are accepted by virtually all US colleges. Take practice tests for both and see which one feels more natural. The ACT includes a science section and is faster-paced. The SAT emphasizes evidence-based reasoning. Many students take both and submit their better score.
When should I take the SAT/ACT?
Most students first take the SAT/ACT in spring of junior year (March-June). This gives you summer to prep and retake in fall of senior year if needed. For early decision applications, October of senior year is usually the last test date you can use.
What are AP exams and why should I take them?
AP (Advanced Placement) exams allow you to earn college credit while in high school. A score of 3, 4, or 5 (out of 5) can earn you credit at most colleges, potentially saving thousands of dollars in tuition and allowing you to skip introductory courses. They also demonstrate academic rigor to college admissions.
How do I get a fee waiver?
Fee waivers are available for students with financial need. Contact your school counselor - they have fee waiver codes for SAT, ACT, and AP exams. Eligibility typically includes participation in free/reduced lunch programs, family income guidelines, or enrollment in certain federal programs.
How many times should I take the SAT/ACT?
Most students take the SAT or ACT 2-3 times. Many students improve significantly between their first and second attempt. However, taking it more than 3 times may have diminishing returns. Most colleges superscore (take your highest section scores from different dates).
